How many signatures do we need?

We need nearly 1,100,000 "raw signatures" to be certain to have the 600,000 "qualified signatures necessary to place Family Notification on the November 2008 election ballot. While other initiatives often fail to get the needed signatures, we are determined to see Sarah's Law qualified. While we are ready to use paid signature gatherers the price can be extremely high. The simple fact is the more funds we spend qualifying Sarah's Law (download abuse stories flyer) the fewer we have available to run a successful campaign.  That's why we are counting on individual churches and whole denominations to use volunteers to gather signatures. "Many hands make light work" and this effort is something we should all care about.

What's our signature gathering deadline?

For largely financial reasons January is the crucial month for volunteer signature gathering. Though we recognize it's short notice, we ask you to please gather and turn into us as many signatures as you can during the first weeks of January (which is also Sanctity of Life Month!).

Our soft target date for returning the petitions to us is the first week of April 2008. This will give the necessary time for the each county to qualify the petitions from their county.

Is signature gathering complicated? Is it legal for churches?

Signature gathering is really not complicated at all. All the instructions will be in the signature gathering packet we will send you or click the link below. If you have additional questions simply call the contact number provided and we will walk you through it. We have found that for churches or organizations a brief 3 to 4 minute explanation at the end of a meeting will ensure a maximum number of signatures are gathered.

Additionally, current IRS codes make it perfectly clear that petitions churches can participate in promoting nonpartisan initiatives tha address moral and ethical concerns.
